Singapore will soon have a sixth autonomous university. On Monday, Parliament gave its approval to the new Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), previously called SIM University.
The establishment of SUSS will provide a wider choice of academic courses to Singaporeans. Its programmes will carry a strong social focus.
SUSS will also work with industry partners to reinforce the real-life application of what is imparted in classroom learning, said Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung.
Mr Ong said that the Government will stick to its pledge to raise the university participation rate of each age group to 40 per cent by 2020.
However, Mr Ong also emphasized that a country’s education system needs to be aligned with the needs of the economy, and in Singapore, this would require capping the proportion of graduates of each new cohort.
